Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 where he loved playing different card games when he was young. He discovered himself getting very aggressive in these card games as he was competing against his father. After graduating from secondary school, Howard decided to place higher education on hold for a little while and headed to New York City to participate in some serious chess. While competing in chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the rear of the room. Howard’s first 2 years were rough as he played countless hours and lose a majority of the time. He made some extra money by being an runner for the poker enthusiasts. He theorized he possibly could better his game by adjusting his life away from poker. He made an effort to acquire more sleep and focus attention more on the game.

The real advancement in his skills happened when he started playing at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the greatest players would frequently play against one another. Howard had access into several of the greatest minds in chess. With their help, he would sharpen his strategic thinking skills. He applied these strategy concepts to the game of NL Texas Holdem.

He also assisted his sister Annie Duke learn the game of poker. Annie Duke was a superb student of poker as she constantly asked questions about how to make the proper decision. Howard Lederer told Annie to move out to Sin City and compete in the World Series of Poker competition. She is one of the greatest women players the poker world has ever seen. Howard Lederer headed to Las Vegas in Nineteen Ninety Three and participated in cash games for the successive decade. When the WPT gained popularity, he decided to participate in more tournaments.
