Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most difficult but well-loved poker games. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for action from all levels of players. This is the chief reason why a once obscure variation, has increased in acceptance so rapidly.

Omaha/8 starts exactly like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to each player. A sequence of betting ensues in which players can wager, check, or drop out. 3 cards are dealt out, this is known as the flop. Another sequence of wagering happens. After all the gamblers have either called or folded, another card is flipped on the turn. an additional sequence of wagering happens at which point the river card is flipped. The gamblers must attempt to make the best high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is the point where a number of players often get confused. Contrasted to Hold’em, in which the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player must use precisely 3 cards on the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. No more, no less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot could be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It’s the best hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the very same notion in nearly all poker games.

A low hand is more difficult, but certainly free’s up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that could be put together, with the lowest being A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The low hand wins half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there is no low hand presented, the higher hand takes the entire pot.

It may seem complex initially, following a couple of rounds you will be able to get the base nuances of play with ease. Since you have players betting for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as so many cards are in play, Omaha hi-low provides an amazing array of betting options and owing to the fact that you have many players shooting for the high, and many battling for the low. If you enjoy a game with a lot of outs and actions, it is worth your time to compete in Omaha 8 or better.
