Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most complex but favored poker games. It’s a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for play from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant game, has increased in acceptance so quickly.

Omaha/8 begins like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to each player. A round of wagering follows in which players can bet, check, or drop out. 3 cards are dealt out, this is called the flop. One more round of betting ensues. After all the gamblers have either called or dropped out, another card is revealed on the turn. a further sequence of wagering ensues and then the river card is revealed. The gamblers must attempt to make the best high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where a number of entrants get flustered. Unlike Texas Hold ‘Em, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player has to use precisely 3 cards from the board, and precisely two hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot could be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It’s the best hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the identical concept in just about every poker game.

A low hand is more complicated, but really opens up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the worst hand that can be put together, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The low hand takes half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there’s no lower hand presented, the higher hand wins the complete pot.
