Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most complex but well-loved poker games. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once invisible variation, has grown in popularity so rapidly.

Omaha 8 or better begins like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to every player. A sequence of betting follows where gamblers can wager, check, or fold. 3 cards are handed out, this is called the flop. Another round of betting happens. After all the gamblers have in turn called or folded, an additional card is revealed on the turn. a further sequence of wagering happens at which point the river card is revealed. The players must attempt to make the strongest high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where a few players can get confused. Unlike Texas Hold ‘Em, in which the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player must use precisely 3 cards on the board, and precisely two hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the strongest hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the identical concept in almost every poker game.

The low hand is more complex, but certainly opens up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that can be put together, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The low hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no low hand available, the higher hand wins the whole pot.

It may seem complicated at first, after a couple of hands you will be able to get the base subtleties of play with ease. Seeing as you have people betting for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are being used at once, Omaha High-Low offers an overwhelming range of wagering possibilities and seeing that you have many individuals trying for the high, along with several trying for the low hand. If you enjoy a game with a lot of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha/8.
