Phil Ivey has been referred to as the best poker player in the world by many of the top-ranked pros. He was born in Riverside, CA and relocated to New Jersey before reaching turning 1. His grandfather taught him penny-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From that point on, he was addicted to poker and wished to pickup every little thing he possibly could about poker. He routinely told his parents that he wanted to be a professional poker player. He did not allow the negative feedback from others destroy his goal of being one of the strongest poker players on the planet.
He began competing intently after getting a fake ID with the name of Jerome. He practiced his game at the poker rooms in Atlantic City. The first few years for him were a teaching experience and coming away with a win was not a normal outcome at the time. Phil made his mark at the 2000 WSOP where he made two final tables and came away with his first WSOP bracelet, in a two dollar, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha game. At the final table he defeated a number of the well known pros which includes "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
He decided to take his game to the next level and moved out west to Las Vegas. He continues to participate in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players in the world. Phil credits his achievements to hard work and an eternal passion for the game of poker. He states that he is learning every day and is quite abashed about his achievements. He admits to making errors every single session of poker and constantly aspires to improve.
Even though Phil has come first in some big-time tournaments, he favors destroying money games on a regular basis.
