Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most difficult but well-loved poker variations. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once invisible variation, has expanded in acceptance so rapidly.

Omaha hi low begins exactly like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to every player. A sequence of wagering ensues in which gamblers can bet, check, or drop out. 3 cards are given out, this is called the flop. Another sequence of wagering happens. Once all the players have in turn called or folded, a further card is revealed on the turn. a further round of betting ensues at which point the river card is flipped. The gamblers will need to make the strongest high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where a number of players often get baffled. Unlike Texas Holdem, where the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player must use precisely three cards on the board, and exactly two cards from their hand. No more, not a single card less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It’s the strongest hand out of everyone’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the same notion in nearly all poker games.

A lower hand is more difficult, but really opens up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the weakest hand that can be made, with the lowest being A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The low hand takes half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no low hand presented, the higher hand wins the whole pot.

It may seem difficult at the outset, after a few hands you will be able to get the basic subtleties of the game simply enough. Seeing as you have people betting for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as so many cards are being used at once, Omaha/8 offers an overwhelming collection of wagering options and owing to the fact that you have numerous players shooting for the high hand, and many battling for the low hand.
