Online High Stakes Poker- Who is Gus Hansen?

by Amari on Sep.12, 2026, under Poker

Gus Hansen experienced a wonderful year on the World Poker Tour where he was the only participant to make it to the closing table in 3 of the tournaments. Gus Hansen has been seen on High Stakes Poker on GSN where he paid $400, 000 to play. You might recall one of the largest pots in big stakes poker recorded history up against Daniel Negreanu. Hansen raked in a huge pot with quads against Negreanu’s full house. Hansen has made many televised poker appearances and is considered to be one of the strongest enthusiasts in the world. While competing in online poker, a different side of Hansen has been seen. He regularly participates in the 200/400 NL max buy-in of $40, 000. Hansen usually buys in for the minimum of Sixteen Thousand dollars and gambles very poorly. He waits for a good hand and then goes all in. I believe Gus is an outstanding poker player but not even close to the familiar players at 200/400no limit. Unless he is penniless, he has little or no reason to play at the game with the min buy in.

Buying in for the minimum takes a majority of the ability out of big stack poker. Gus is supposed to be 1 of the best poker players anywhere in the world but he can’t buy in for the total dollar value. I think tv can skew our view of the real world at times. The greatest players anywhere in the world might be guys you have won’t have heard about. Gus can be seen wagering on web poker on Full Tilt. He generally competes in high stakes Omaha and texas hold’em. Gus Hansen has proven himself as a competition player. Can he back up his abilities in cash rounds?
